UK weather forecast: After hottest day of the year rain returns on Sunday

After the hottest day of the year in parts of the UK on Saturday, it looks like the rain will return today.

Temperatures climbed to 27.6C degrees at Heathrow in West London, beating 2019's previous top temperature of 25.8C set last month.

In Bristol temperatures didn’t quite hit the top 20s, but still reached highs of 24C.

But cloudy skies and showers are expected to return to most parts of the country from lunchtime today.

A cold front coming in is going to bring markedly cooler temperatures compared to Saturday, with showers from around 1pm turning to pretty heavy rain by mid-afternoon.

It will only clear by dusk, so if you’re hanging out the washing, leave it until overnight. The outlook for Monday and into next week is for milder temperatures - nothing near the warmth of Saturday, and sunshine and showers.

So it looks set to be a one-day summer - just for Saturday tea-time, and then we’re back to April showers well into next week.

A Met Office spokesman said: "Although the heat will be much more limited on Sunday, we could still reach those sorts of temperatures."

"Northern England will be significantly cooler than the south on Saturday, with the average at around 18C.

"Scotland, Northern Ireland and perhaps parts of northern England will not be necessarily particularly wet, but certainly a good deal cooler.

"We've got that rain pushing in from the west on Sunday, so Scotland will see some quite persistent rain on Sunday.

"Northern Ireland will see some rain and other western parts of England and Wales too."
