UK weather forecast: 900-mile wide 'Spanish plume' to bring sizzling 26C heat

Brits look set for another Bank Holiday weekend of blue skies and barbecues as the weather warms up in time for the May Day break.

After the scorching Easter weekend, which was followed by days of cold weather rounded off by Storm Hannah, forecasters say temperatures are set to rise by next Sunday and Monday.

The sunnier weather is down to a 900-mile wide plume of warm air coming our way from Spain.

Some forecasters are now predicting a high temperature of 26C at the weekend - which would beat the 25.5C recorded by the Met Office on Easter Saturday in Gosport, Hants.

MeteoGroup forecaster Paul Mott said: “There will be a big change from a wet and cold weekend, with temperatures rising through the week as warmth from Spain is most likely to arrive leading into the Bank Holiday weekend.

“Temperatures over the long weekend are expected climb into the low 20s at least, with a decent chance of highs around Easter’s maximum temperature of 25.5C.

“There is increasing support for warmth to last until Bank Holiday Monday.

“There is a less likely scenario of temperatures not being quite as warm - but even if that happens, dry and pleasant conditions are still expected due to high pressure.

The Met Office urged caution, but said temperatures in the mid-20s were ‘certainly possible’.

Met forecasters said it was still too early to predict accurately the movements of two pressure systems set to move over the UK next week.

Forecaster Craig Snell said: “We can’t promise temperatures in the mid-20s although they are certainly possible.

“It’s most likely the weekend will start off with normal temperatures for this time of year – around the mid-teens – before heating up into the 20s on Sunday and Monday.

“What we can say is that it looks as though every part of the UK will get at least one pleasant day with minimal showers and sunny spells over the May Day Bank Holiday.”

Bank Holiday Monday is forecast to be the warmest day in Manchester next weekend, with long periods of sunshine and very little cloud cover helping the mercury push 20 degrees.

In Cardiff overcast conditions could limit the maximum to 17 degrees, again on Monday.

But on the south coast in Brighton, long sunny spells are forecast throughout the weekend.

The warmer weather comes after Storm Hannah became Britain’s worst late spring storm for years with 82 mph winds in west Wales, lashing rain and 32ft high waves.
