UK weather: Flood warning in place as Britain prepares to be battered with rain this weekend

Britain is braced for “thundery” showers this weekend, with forecasters warning of possible flooding and travel disruption.

Heavy rain is expected to sweep across the south of the country, and the Met Office has issued a yellow flood warning for southwest England as the region prepares for the worst of the downpour.

Torrential weather could see up to 50mm of rain falling in just 24 hours across Devon and Cornwall.

“Flooding of a few homes and businesses is likely,” said a Met Office spokesperson.

Bus and train services in the southwest are also likely to be affected, and the thundery showers could contain hail at times.

“It will be quite wet on Saturday across the south coast,” said Steven Keats, meteorologist at the Met Office.

“There may be some flooding across Devon and Cornwall. And there’s likely to be surface water on the roads.”

The damp weather may spread further east across England during Saturday, he added, with at least 20 to 44mm of rain expected to fall by the evening.

Temperatures will reach between 7 and 10C across the UK on Saturday, as an easterly wind continues to bring chillier weather to Britain.

Despite the cold snap, large parts of Wales, northern England and Scotland are likely to enjoy dry and sunny spells on Saturday, with the possibility of the occassional shower.

Better weather is forecast for Sunday, with Met Office meteorologists predicting that it will be “mostly dry with sunny spells” across much of the country.

But southern and eastern parts of England, and parts of eastern Scotland, will see some showers.
