UK weather: Flash flooding thunderstorms leave town underwater as heavy rain falls

A town in Wales has been hit by serious flooding after days of hot weather were broken with heavy downpours and lightning.

At around 3pm Aberyswyth in west Wales was hit by an intense period of rain.

Over the course of 20 minutes several centimetres hit the coastal town.

The deluge proved too much for part of Aberyswyth's drainage system, which overflowed.

Photos taken in the town show a large lake of water covering the streets and roads.

While much of the rest of the UK is still basking in glorious August weather, the skies have broken open in parts of the west.

The Met Office warned of thunderstorms on Monday warning "prolonged and torrential rain" were stretching from Devon into parts of Wales.

A great wall of rain moved across the south westerly tip of Wales shortly after midday today.

As it headed towards Ireland it caught towns including Porthmadog and Kidwelly with its torrents.

In Aberyswyth locals took to social media to document the severity of the rainstorm.

While parts of Wales were being battered with rain, elsewhere in the UK the sun continued to shine with record temperatures.

As of late afternoon the south and south east of England were enjoying the best of it.

Temperatures hit the mid-thirties mark in London and surrounding areas.

The further north and west in the country you are, the less chance of a scorchingly hot end to the day.

Mid-twenties temperatures in the Midlands and north are due to fall to low twenties in most of Scotland and the south west.

Those in Aberyswyth can't even hope to dry off that quickly, with temperatures stuck around the 20C mark.
