UK weather: Expert predicts '28C' heatwave next month as Met Office says 2022 could be one of the 'hottest on record'

Weather experts predict this year could be one of the hottest on record, with temperatures expected to soar next month. The Met Office has forecast a heatwave for April as the hot weather is expected to come "fairly early."

April weather usually sees a daily high of around 12C and a low of 4C, but one weather expert says the mercury could climb to a sweltering 28C, with temperatures peaking in the middle of the month, Liverpool Echo reports.

The Met Office predicts 2022 will be among the warmest years on record - though it will be cooler than some fairly recent years. This is due to the impact of La Niña in the tropical Pacific, where sea surface temperatures are below average.

Dr Nick Dunstone, Met Office scientist, said: “Global temperature has been slightly suppressed during 2021 because of the cooling influence of La Niña in the tropical Pacific. With another La Niña now underway, making this a so-called ‘double-dip’ La Niña, it is not surprising that we are forecasting another relatively cool year for global temperatures when compared with the run of years since 2015.

“However, it is still likely that 2022 will be above 1.0C and hence continue the series of warmest years for global temperature since 1850.” While this is good news for fans of warmer climes, the Met Office is currently predicting April weather to be mild or "very mild" with spells of colder conditions also possible.

Weather forecaster Jim Dale, founder of the British Weather Services, told the Express: "I know March is the start of spring but I think we're probably going to get properly into April before we start to see the searing sort of temperatures. I wouldn't be surprised to see 26C, 27C, 28C in the middle of April."
