UK weather: Even more heavy downpours expected for the rest of the week

Heavy downpours are expected to batter Britain for the rest of the week after more than a month's worth of rain fell in one day.

Tuesday saw torrential rain cause havoc across the country with a whopping 51.2mm falling in Boscombe Down in Wiltshire during a 12-hour period.

A yellow-  danger for life-  weather warning was issued for the majority of the country throughout Tuesday.

Today (Wednesday, September 25) is set to be drier for those in the south but a low-pressure front is expected to bring more rain to Scotland and the North West.

Met Office meteorologist Steven Keates told The Sun: "I wouldn't be surprised if more (warnings) are issued before the week has finished."

Temperatures could rise to the low 20s, which is slightly warmer than average for early autumn.

The mercury normally hovers around the mid-to-high teens during this time of year.

Experts are predicting it will remain dry for most of Wednesday in Bristol.

Although heavy showers are expected around 6am but the wet weather should have cleared in time for the school run/commute to work.

Met Office weather forecast

Wednesday:

Rain continuing to affect parts of southern Scotland and northern England, but most other areas turning brighter with only scattered showers. These, however, could still be heavy in the east.

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday:

Remaining unsettled with showers or longer spells of rain, some of which are likely to be heavy, interspersed with brief drier interludes. Often windy with temperatures close to average throughout.
