UK weather: Downpours to batter UK before sweltering 34C heatwave

Downpours and gales are set to batter Britain before a 34-degree heatwave arrives.

North-west England will see outbreaks of rain that will persist throughout the day before moving across Northern Ireland and western Scotland later in the afternoon.

Meanwhile, Bristol will enjoy a dry day on Monday with plenty of sunshine.

A yellow warning of heavy rain is still in place across parts of western Scotland, especially over hills as outbreaks of rain push in from the Atlantic, according to the Mirror.

The dramatic weather could cause road closures, rain delays and cancellations due to flooding in regions that could see 25-50mm of rainfall.

But things down south should be calmer, with temperatures hitting 25C in the south-east.

Met Office meteorologist Mark Wilson said: "There will be thicker cloud across western parts of Northern Ireland with some outbreaks of rain here but most of England and Wales are going to have a fairly dry start.

"Today, plenty of bright and sunny spells to enjoy first thing with temperatures into the mid-teens across much of England, Wales and the east of Scotland - we hang onto a fairly dry picture.

"Some of that rain could well turn quite heavy into the afternoon particularly across higher grounds of western Scotland.

"That breeze will start to pick up across western areas as well."

By Tuesday, the weather will turn very warm and humid as the mercury soars to up to 34C in the south-east and 31C in Bristol.
