UK weather dates for "August heatwave" that will see Britain bake

An updated weather forecast suggests the potential late summer "heatwave" could continue into September.

As reported by the MEN in recent days, the latest weather predictions have given hope of a sunny end to August - with a "potential heatwave" with warmer than average temperatures in the final days of the month over the Bank Holiday weekend.

Now, a new forecast from the MeteoGroup, published on the BBC website, suggests that the warmer than average spell could extend into September - although that may not be the case for the whole of the UK.

However, there is growing confidence that the end of August will boast "summerlike" weather with sustained sunny spells.

For the week of August 23 - August 29, the BBC forecast says: "We have high confidence in the high pressure and above average temperatures, but lower confidence just how warm it will get as this will be very sensitive to the exact position of the high."

It went on to explain: "As high pressure sits overhead for longer, it will help warm up the air stuck in place overhead, so we anticipate that temperatures will be widely above average for many of the days. With this comes an increased chance for a heat wave to develop."

For the same week, the Met Office say: "there is a greater chance of winds from a southerly sector allowing for the possibility of some very warm spells."

But it comes with the warning: "This may also bring the chance of intermittent heavy rain and thundery showers."

The average daytime high for August in the UK is 21 degrees.

Now, the BBC has added that the warm spell could extend into September - but it will most likely be in the south.

For those of us in the north it's looking less likely, unfortunately.

The BBC forecast says: "High pressure looks like it may cling on for the start of the month as it gradually declines in northern Europe".

But at this stage, forecasters are saying "confidence is low" due to the Atlantic hurricane season.

It adds: "Confidence for September comes with a rather healthy caveat depending on hurricane activity. This means the risk scenario is that high pressure remains strong and entrenched overhead, keeping things warmer and drier than normal and prolonging the summerlike weather."

While many will be looking forward to a sunny end to August, it looks like the coming week (August 16 - 21) will be a dull and cloudy one in Manchester with the occasional rainy shower.

The forecast for the week ahead can be found here.
