UK weather: 'Danger to life' wind warning threatening school run havoc

The Met Office has extended a 'danger to life' warning, expanding it to a wider area in the south of England as the ferocious Storm Atiyah arrives.

A yellow severe weather warning for wind is in place until 9am today (Monday).

More of Wales has also been included in the alert as the high gusts are forecast to hit further south.

Forecasters have warned Brits to expect disruption to travel and huge waves for coastal communities during rush hour.

Met Office meteorologist Luke Miall has warned, winds and rain are expected to hit hardest in the small hours of this morning and could bring "squally" conditions once commuters are on the move, reports the Mirror.

Bristol is not included in the alert, which predicts gusts of 50mph inland and 75mph in coastal areas.

Fallen trees have already caused disruption in the Bristol area when one lane had to be closed on the A36 and the M48 westbound had was shut due to strong gusts on Sunday.

"There could be some disruption through to tomorrow morning for commuters as the warning is in force until 9am, " said Mr Miall.

"So people up early and doing the school run likely need to be wary of some disruption tomorrow morning."

Coastal regions covering Wales, south-west England and north-wet England are expected to see large waves up to 40ft offshore, whereas Scotland's west coast will see 28ft waves.

Residents have also been urged to secure their Christmas lights or inflatable decorations to buildings.

In Bristol today it's likely to be a sunny, bright with highs of around 9C - although feels like temperatures will be just 6C.

Experts are predicting wet but warmer conditions on Tuesday with the mercury peaking at 13C.
