UK weather: Danger to life warnings issued as flooding hits large parts of the country

Prolonged and heavy downfalls are expected to continue to lash the country today after a month's worth of rain fell in just one day.

Homes had to evacuated and customers were trapped in a shopping centre in Sheffield on Thursday, November 7 as a mammoth downpour caused havoc in Yorkshire.

An amber weather warning for Sheffield and Huddersfield remains in place until 6am today (Friday, November 8) when people can expect more flooding.

Bristol residents have so far escaped the worst of the weather and forecasters are predicting another dry day for the city. However, Saturday will see a change in the weather with downpours likely for most of the day.

The Met Office said “prolonged and heavy” downpours throughout Thursday and into Friday could see rain of 80millimetres (3inches) in some areas of the north of England, according to the Express.

In other areas, 70millimetres (2.7inches) of rain is expected for north-facing hills, especially in the yellow warning area of Wales.

Some areas are also expecting 30millimetres (1.2inches) of rain.

Met Office meteorologist Aidan McGivern said: "There is a risk some places will see significant amounts of rain, particularly the higher ground of North Wales, the Pennines, the North York Moors and the Peak District."

Met Office weather forecast

Friday:

Rain slowly clearing away south, with mist and fog slow to clear. Drier and brighter elsewhere with sunny spells during the afternoon.

Outlook for Saturday to Monday:

Cold with patchy fog early Saturday before rain, with hill snow in the north, spreads east, clearing south through Sunday. Showers follow, ahead of further rain and hill snow Monday.
