UK weather: 'Danger to life' thunderstorm warning issued by Met Office

Britain has been basking in wall to wall sunshine for almost two weeks.

People across the country have enjoyed blue skies and scorching days as the mercury has peaked at 34C.

But the weather is about to take a turn for the worst for some parts of the UK.

A 'danger to life' warning has been issued as heavy rain showers and thunderstorms threaten to hit Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England.

The alert is in place for Thursday (July 11) .

Almost all of Scotland and Northern Ireland, along with a large stretch of northern England from Manchester upwards, falls inside the forecast danger zone, according to the Mirror.

Homes and businesses could be hit by flash flooding, with buildings at risk of being struck by lightning.

Trains and buses will likely be delayed as the electrical storm and ground water could plays havoc with roads.

Tempestuous in the  north will also contrasts with those in the south of the country.

Things will remain mild from the midlands down to the capital and to the coast beyond, with highs of 21C in London and minimal chance of rain on Thursday.

What causes thunder and lightning?

Alex Burkill, Met Office forecaster, said: "On Wednesday, it will be particularly warm with temperatures at 26C, possibly 27C in some southern counties.

"But showers on Thursday could turn very thundery and will be heavy. It will though still be quite humid, which can feel unpleasant.

"The storms are something we are keeping an eye on [for weather warnings].

"The thunder will bring a lot of downpours, which could cause localised problems, so we will watch these."
