UK weather charts show 'heatwave' conditions on these August days

Sunseekers have been clinging onto the hope of a late-summer heatwave over the past couple of weeks as cloudy skies and drizzle set in.

Mainland Europe is sweltering in temperatures that are surpassing previous record highs, prompting hopes hot air could arrive in England.

Sicily, in Italy, reported scorching temperatures of 48.8C on Wednesday (August 11). This figure is awaiting verification and could be the highest ever recorded in Europe.

The burst of warmth in the UK will be predominantly concentrated in the south and could even extend into September, according to a forecast from the MeteoGroup on the BBC.

For the week of August 23 to August 29, the BBC forecast says: "We have high confidence in the high pressure and above average temperatures, but lower confidence just how warm it will get as this will be very sensitive to the exact position of the high.

"As high pressure sits overhead for longer, it will help warm up the air stuck in place overhead, so we anticipate that temperatures will be widely above average for many of the days. With this comes an increased chance for a heat wave to develop."

For the same week, the Met Office says: "There is a greater chance of winds from a southerly sector allowing for the possibility of some very warm spells."
