UK weather: Burn warning for Brits hitting beaches as temperatures to soar to 25C

Sun seekers enjoying the beaches and outdoors with sizzling temperatures this Bank Holiday have been warned to watch out for sunburn by the Met Office.

The country could see the hottest day of the year so far on Monday when the mercury may reach 25C and many people are hitting the beaches to lap up the fine weather.

After a dismal May so far with wet and cold weather, the sun has finally arrived with a warm day predicted for Sunday and then a real scorcher on Monday.

The Met Office warned: "Keep covered and wear a hat and sunglasses, spend time in the shade and use a high factor sun cream with good UVA protection to protect yourself."

Around 10.8 million leisure journeys are expected on roads according to the RAC, clogging up major routes.

Brits flocked to beaches up and down the country on Saturday with top temperatures rising to 23C and they will be looking for more over the rest of the holiday weekend.

The weekend started well as London and the South East recorded highs of 21C on Saturday, sending people flocking to beaches and parks.

In Cambridge, a floating bar did a roaring trade with the punters out on the River Cam and all those lining the banks.

The fine weather stretched the length of the country, with the mercury creeping over 20C in most areas.

Sunday across the north of England and the Midlands is expected to bring a few clouds but also expected highs of 22C.

Wales will also bask in the ongoing sunshine on Sunday, with a top temperature of 21C.

It is a similar picture in Northern Ireland, while in Scotland things will be a little cooler with a maximum of around 15C in Edinburgh.

“We can look forward to a warm and dry day for most on Sunday,” said a Met forecaster, who warned people to be remember to use sun cream.

“The sun will soon get to work on Sunday morning burning clouds back to eastern coasts. Some strong sunshine on Sunday and very high UV levels in the south.

“One or two showers bubbling too for Northern Ireland and Scotland with highs of around 23C and 24C. Going into Sunday evening and those showers will slowly fade away but we will see some misty low cloud encroaching into some eastern areas.

“Looking further ahead to Monday another sunny and widely warm day but with very high UV levels remember your sun protection if you are outdoors.”

The current highest temperature so far this year is 24.5C recorded on March 31 in Kew Gardens, London.
