UK weather: 'Bucketload of sunshine' as temperatures set to rise 21C

Highs of 21C are predicted over the weekend following Thursday's 'bucketload of sunshine'.

Forecasters say today (Friday) a westerly wind will move in "helping to tick the temperatures up a degree or two" while dominant high pressure keeps things dry.

"That's a trend that we continue on towards the weekend," BBC forecaster Phil Avery.

Friday is likely to bring highs of 18C while the weekend is expected to see Britain welcome back temperatures in the 20s, reports the Mirror.

Mr Avery said Thursday saw 'bucketload of sunshine anywhere from central and southern Scotland to Northern Ireland and the greater part of England and Wales'.

Met Office meteorologist Matthew Box said it will be cloudy across the north and north-west of the country, with a potential for rain in western Scotland, Northern Ireland and parts of northern England.

Wales and much of England are forecast to remain dry with some sunny spells and temperatures more usual for May into the weekend.

"Temperatures will have recovered by then to be mostly near normal [for the time of year], and it could be warm even and parts of the south could see temperatures hit 20 or 21 in the south east on Saturday and, more likely, Sunday," he said.

Bristol will miss out on the warmest temperatures this weekend, with the mercury not climbing above 17C.

Friday will see sunny spells in the morning, but cloud is likely for the rest of the day.

Met Office weather forecast

Friday:

Mainly dry with variable cloud and sunny spells, and feeling warm in central and southern parts. Cloudier and breezier in the far north with further showers.

Outlook for Saturday to Monday:

Dry in the south with some sunshine and feeling warmer than recently. Elsewhere, cloudier with some rain at times mainly during Sunday and Monday, especially in the west.
