UK weather: Brits lashed by heavy rain for 48 hours as nation gears up for bank holiday

Brits will have to endure washout weather over the next 48 hours, according to forecasters.

Heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected to make their way across large parts of the United Kingdom today (August 25), reaching precipitation levels of 10mm per hour in some areas.

Some of the most substantial downpours are forecast for areas where rainfall has been at critically low levels for much of the summer, including the southeast of England and East Anglia.

More localised showers are also predicted on Friday, while the rest of the bank holiday weekend is likely to stay mostly dry thanks to tropical air moving up from the Azores.

Speaking in the latest Met Office 10 day trend forecast, Aidan McGivern said: "What's been happening through this year so far and especially during the summer, is high pressure from the Azores keeps extending across the UK, hence the warm summer and the very dry summer that we've had.

"And that repeating pattern repeats again this weekend”

A yellow warning for thunderstorms is in place from the Met Office for east and southeast of England on Thursday between 12am and 3pm.

The alert means some disruption is expected, with transport delays possible and driving conditions potentially affected by spray.
