UK weather: Britain to be hotter than Benidorm as temperatures set to reach 29C

Much of the UK is set to be hotter than Benidorm as the scorching weather conditions continue as we head into the second half of the week.

Britain has been basking in glorious sunshine for the last few weeks barring the odd thunderstorm as London and Manchester encountered at the start of the week.

May and June have been a stark contrast to April when the country was hit by heavy rainfall, but the hot temperatures do not seem to be leaving the UK anytime soon.

Thursday will be a repeat of the start of the week as warm overnight temperatures lay the foundation for sweltering afternoon conditions.

Even the East coast, which has been cooler than the rest of the country in recent weeks, will experience highs of mid-20s with much of Britain set to peak between 26C and 29C.

That will be hotter than popular tourist destination Benidorm, where the mercury is set to climb to as high as 27C on Thursday afternoon.

Met Office meteorologist Clare Nasir said: "It's a fine day. One or two isolated showers can't be ruled out through the afternoon. Eastern counties could see one and so too the western side of Wales."

"Before that, though, temperatures will reach 26C to 29C degrees inland, pleasantly warm along the east coast and temperatures across Northern Ireland peaking at the mid 20s."

There are risks of thunderstorms for the western coast of Northern Ireland just the afternoon and early evening with "one or two quite heavy bursts". The region is likely to experience thunder, lightning and gustier winds.

Cloud cover returns to the northwest of Scotland, while spots of patchy cloud is expected in some parts of England and Wales overnight. Temperatures should be similar to earlier in the week in the low to mid teens.

UK 5 day weather forecast:

Today:

Any early low cloud clearing quickly through the morning, leaving a mostly dry day with plenty of prolonged sunshine. The odd shower is possible in the far west. Feeling warm.

Tonight:

Any showers in the far west will slowly fade during the evening. Elsewhere long clear spells will lead to a few isolated mist patches forming, these mostly in the east.

Friday:

Any early morning mist will quickly clear leaving another day with plenty of sunshine for most. Feeling very warm, locally hot. Increasing chance of showers in the west later.

Outlook for Saturday to Monday:

Dry with long sunny spells. Turning more humid with an increasing chance of thunderstorms across the south on Saturday and then more widely by Sunday and Monday.
