UK weather: Britain to bask in 33C HEATWAVE as summer finally arrives

Britain will bask in a glorious 33C heatwave - as summer finally arrives this week.

The scorching temperatures - the hottest of the year so far - will bring an abrupt end to heavy downpours and thunderstorms, which will first plague parts of the country in the coming days.

"Thunderstorms will be fairly well scattered and not everyone will see them but again if you do catch one they're likely to be pretty hefty downpours," said Met Office forecaster Simon Partridge.

"Overall through much of England and Wales tomorrow generally speaking it's a reasonably dry day with some bright sunny spells but there's that risk of thundery showers which can break out anywhere in those areas.

"The most reliable places to stay dry and see the best of the sunshine really is western Wales and southwest England on Monday."

But temperatures could reach 33C in the south east of England by Friday,
the Met Office added.

Overnight highs of 19C throughout the week will mean muggy conditions for many.

The highest temperature of the year so far was 28.8C in Weybourne, Norfolk,  on June 2.

The June record is 35.6C, which occurred in Southampton, Hants., in 1978.

The heatwave will follow , after the Met Office issued a three-day yellow warning for thunderstorms in the northern part of England where torrential rain and lightning is expected to bring chaos.

Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures as well.

There is also the danger of power cuts leaving many without electricity.
