UK weather: Bookies predict 'coldest October ever' despite Indian Summer this week

Bookies believe we may be on course for the coldest October ever, despite an Indian Summer expected this week.

Temperatures are set to peak at 18C by Friday in some parts of the UK - and in Bristol the city will bask in highs of 16C

But enjoy the warm weather while you can because after the continental plume sweeps through Britain a cold-snap is set to beign.

Ladbrokes has slashed the odds of the "coldest October ever" from 10/11 to 1/2, the Mirror Online reports.

The mercury is expected to drop by Sunday with frost and snow in northern parts of the UK, the Met Office said.

The betting company believes the country could see record-breaking temperatures before the end of this month.

Ladbrokes spokesman Alex Apati said: "It's snow joke.

"We're expecting this to go down as the coldest October ever."

Craig Snell, a senior meteorologist at the Met Office, told the Daily Star: "Between now and the end of the week, temperatures are actually running a little above average.

"While things will be a little drier throughout the week, we can expect rainier conditions by the weekend, with the milder air soon turning a bit colder.

"Overnight we could see a touch of frost, with that and the possibility of snow most likely in Scotland and Northern Ireland."

But before the cold snap begins, much of central, south, east, south-east and south-west England will bask in sunshine today (Tuesday), however northern parts of Scotland will see heavy rain.

The north-south split will continue on Wednesday as high winds batter the north, while dry and sunny weather heats up the south.

Thursday will be dominated by a mix of cloud and sunshine, with light showers in central, north, north-west England, Northern Ireland and most of Scotland.

Despite temperatures soaring on Friday, much of the country will be lashed by downpours, marking a resumption of the October washout.

Met Office weather forecast

Tuesday:

Most of England and Wales fine and dry once early fog patches clear. Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England cloudier and windy with rain over the far north of Scotland.

In Bristol, the day will start partly cloudy but will change to sunny by late morning, according to the Met Office. There will be highs of 14C.

Outlook for Wednesday to Friday:

Morning fog patches may affect central and southern areas Wednesday morning. Unsettled weather with some heavy rain in the northwest extending to remaining parts. Some dry spells in the southeast.

In Bristol, temperatures will be between 14C and 16C throughout the week, with a mixture of clear and cloudy intervals.
