UK weather: Bitter -6C night and frost ahead before sunny Mother's Day weekend

Britain is braced for an up-and-down weekend with frosty lows of -6C tonight before a balmy weekend of sun.

With many Brits self-isolating or limiting their social interaction, walks in the park could be a good bet for the weekend with temperatures potentially rising to 15C.

But this will come only after a barrage of sub-zero chills, ice and morning chills as temperatures plummet.

In the south the sunshine and clear weather will make the nights cold but days warm, while there will be more cloud and the odd shower further north.

Met Office forecaster Simon Partridge told the Sun: “Overnight it will be mostly dry and still cold in most of the country.

“It’s possible that in parts of Scotland the temperature could get down as low as -6C and in parts of the Midlands it could get down to -2 or -3C.

“Saturday and Sunday will be warmer but on Sunday night temperatures could drop down to -3C or -4C.

"So it looks we’re in for a few cold nights and sunny days next week.”

Met Office five-day forecast

Today:

Cloudy in the south with a few spots of rain in places, though some brightness developing this afternoon. Northern parts seeing sunny spells and just a few showers. Feeling chilly in a brisk breeze.

Tonight:

Cloud becoming mostly confined to the far south, where the odd shower is still possible. Clear periods for most and turning cold with a widespread frost.

Saturday:

Most parts dry with plenty of sunshine. Perhaps cloudier at times in the far southwest with a few isolated showers. Feeling chilly in brisk easterly winds.

Outlook for Sunday to Tuesday:

Mostly fine, dry and rather cold, with a keen southeasterly wind and variable cloud. Rain and strengthening winds arriving in the far northwest later Monday, moving slowly southeast through Tuesday.
