UK weather: Big freeze incoming with temperatures plunging and snow and ice warnings

Freezing temperatures are set to strike the UK with snow and ice warned for the whole length of the country as Brits brace for a wintery chill this weekend.

After Met Office forecasters warned of cold conditions until at least mid-February the mercury is now expected to plunge while heavy snow is set to cause travel chaos.

A string of amber and yellow weather warnings are currently in place across many parts of the country until Monday.

Today, Scotland is set to be battered by snow with warnings in force across much of the country until tomorrow.

Forecasters have urged those affected to be aware of 'some significant disruption to transport and utilities' as well as long delays or cancellations for transport.

Roads may also become blocked by deep snow with vehicles stranded.

A yellow warning for rain is also in place for parts of the north east of England, with warnings of flooding in some homes and businesses, with that warning in place until midday tomorrow.

From Saturday warnings for snow and ice will cover the length of Britain from midday up to midnight on Sunday.

By next week, temperatures will be struggling to get much above 0C in a number of areas, with some regions such as the Pennines and high parts of Scotland seeing several degrees below that.

Birmingham faces lows of minus 2C by Tuesday morning, while a strong easterly wind will make it feel many degrees below freezing in some parts, according to Met Office forecaster Steven Keates.

He said it will be "really unpleasant" to be outdoors, adding: "If you do have to go outside there are lots of layers required I think."

Mr Keates said the south will see a "marked" drop in temperatures across Saturday and Sunday, with some parts possibly seeing as much as 5-10cm of snow.

He added: "Enough snow is on the cards I think to cause potentially quite a bit of disruption in the south east of England through Sunday, and potentially very early next week as well."

It comes after Brits continue to endure reams of snow as well as flooding in many regions across the UK.

Warnings of floods remain in place with the Environment Agency issuing 38 of its second-most-severe flood warnings, while it has issued 133 flood alerts.

Today:

Heavy snow continuing for inland, upland parts of north and east Scotland, drifting in strong winds. Heavy rain for some central areas. Some fog and low cloud further south, followed by mix of bright intervals and showers; still fairly mild.

Tonight:

Further heavy snow for similar areas of Scotland. Wet for some central areas. Southern UK sees some areas of showery rain but drier, clearer gaps with patchy fog and frost.

Saturday:

Further snow across parts of Scotland, and increasingly some other northern and eastern areas later. Low cloud and showery rain affecting southern areas but a few brighter gaps. Turning colder.
