UK weather: Beaches empty as 'coldest ever' August Bank Holiday brings touch of frost

Brits are experiencing one of the coldest ever August Bank Holiday weekends.

Temperatures dropped to as low as 6C overnight with more miserable, chilly weather forecast on Sunday and Monday.

Beaches were empty on Saturday as temperatures struggled to climb over 18C in the South East.

The scenes were a far cry from the same weekend in 2019, when beauty spots and outdoor spaces were packed as temperatures climbed to 33C in London.

High temperatures are 5C lower than average and some parts of Scotland may even get a touch of frost.

The Met Office forecasts highs of around 11C on Monday in Scotland's central Highlands.

The coldest late August Bank Holiday high temperature since records started is 10.1C in 1979 in Shetland, Met Office records showed.

Air frost in Braemar, Aberdeenshire, often the coldest place in the UK, only occurs once every five years in August, Met Office data shows.

The Weather Outlook forecaster Brian Gaze said: "Frost in Scotland is the cherry on the cake for cheesed-off families on staycation amid some of the worst summer weather for 50 years, including named storms Ellen and Francis."

A Met Office forecaster said: "It's a cool northerly flow with chilly nights and frost possible in Scotland."

During last year's holiday sizzler, thousands flocked to parks and beaches as the mercury soared.

The temperature broke the record for the hottest late Bank Holiday weekend ever - smashing the previous record set 18 years ago in 2001 when the mercury reached 31.5C.

Today:
