UK weather: Autumn truly arrives next week with hail and thunder to batter Brits

Make the most of the summery weather today... because it looks like autumn arrives tomorrow.

The September mini-heatwave is due to give way to something much colder and wetter, with hail and thunder even predicted in some parts of the UK on Monday.

Most of us have enjoyed glorious sunrises recently, like the one in Baldersdale, Co Durham (below), yesterday. But don’t get used to them.

BBC weather forecaster Matt Taylor said: “If you’re wondering where autumn is, it’s not far away. Wait until we get to mid-week, next week – a big change. Temperatures are going to drop.”

They could fall as low as 10C in Inverness, which is enjoying temperatures in the high teens this weekend. And while London will bask in 22C today, it will be wet tomorrow and thermometers will only reach about 18C.

Nicola Maxey, at the Met Office, said a cold front will cross the UK from East to West on Monday bringing “potentially heavy rain”.

She added: “Hail and thunder is also a risk to the North and West, so Monday heralds a real change to autumnal-style weather.”

Met Meteorologist Adam Thornhill said the change is due to “a shift in the position of the jet stream”.

■ An ash cloud from the La Palma volcano has grounded flights to and from the Spanish island. Airport operator Aena said that plane traffic has been suspended “due to the accumulation of ash” in the air following the eruption, which started last Sunday.
