UK weather: Arctic front to bring -8C temperatures as flood warnings issued

Freezing weather direct from Iceland is set to plunge temperatures to around -8C in some areas this week, with more rain promised for the nation.

Brits can expect “changeable weather ” patterns over the coming week with southern area of the country told to expect sunshine, while the north could see the return of snow.

However, the Met Office says the nation can expect more settled conditions towards the end of next week.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist, Frank Saunders, said: “A cold front, followed by cold arctic Canadian air, has now pushed south across the country and has brought a spell of windy, showery and cold weather.

“Gusty winds mean blizzards are possible on higher routes and National Severe Weather warnings are in place.

“The winds pick up again..in the weekend with weather fronts bringing rain to the north and west and milder air spreads back in here.”

The Met Office’s forecast for Sunday says an area of low pressure passing to the northwest of the UK, moving towards Iceland, is expected to bring further strong winds and rain to the northwest of the country.

It added: “After a spell of rain for all on Monday, it looks like a high-pressure system will settle across the UK and dominate our weather from Tuesday.

“This means it will be less windy and less changeable, although clear skies at night could potentially give us some frosty starts.”

Wednesday is expected to bring cloud and rain, continuing into Thursday.

The band of rain will move east on Friday, weakening as it progresses, being replaced by fine weather and the risk of overnight frost into next weekend.

The Met Office added there are no storms with the potential of becoming named on the horizon.

Despite that, some parts of the country are still feeling the effects of storms Dudley, Eunice and Franklin.

Five severe flood warnings are in place along the River Severn, including at Apperley and The Leigh and Tewkesbury as a result of heavy rainfall.

Residents have been advised to move valuables to a safe location to avoid water which is likely to seep into homes.

The Environment Agency’s warning says: “River levels remain high at the Haw Bridge river gauge as a result of heavy rainfall.

“Consequently, flooding of property is expected. We expect flooding to affect Abbots Court, Deerhurst. Haw Bridge peaked at 5.12m on Friday morning, 25/02/22.

Several flood alerts are in place along the River Severn, including in Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire (PA)

“We expect river levels to remain high into next week. We are closely monitoring the situation.

“Our incident response staff are liaising with emergency services.

“Please move possessions and valuables off the ground or to safety and avoid contact with flood water.”

Less severe warnings are in place for the River Avon in Worcestershire, River Lugg south of Leominster and Severn estuary from Gloucester to Sharpness.
