UK weather: Arctic blast predicted after hottest day of the year so far

Experts are predicting an Arctic barrage could hit this weekend - the bad weather follows the hottest day of the year so far.

Yesterday (Wednesday) saw temperatures soaring to a balmy 19C in some parts of Britain as the majority of the country enjoyed the glorious weather in their back garden.

Britain was even hotter than 17C Melbourne, Australia, where summer has only just ended.

But weather maps show a 1,000 mile-wide cold air Arctic blast is about to land in the UK.

Forecasters at the Met Office are predicting snow flurries in the north this weekend just as the clocks go forward.

Snow threatens low levels in northern UK and further south on higher ground, the Weather Outlook said.

Despite the drop in temperatures, it will stay mostly sunny, reports the Mirror.

The Weather Outlook forecaster Brian Gaze said: "Cold Arctic air is expected to sweep southwards by the weekend, with a risk of snow in the North even at low levels, and further south over high ground, and widespread frosts.”

Met Office forecaster Marco Petagna said: “It's mild south-westerly winds the many - but a cold northerly wind to end the week.”

Another Met Office forecaster said: “Maximum temperatures are peaking well above average.

"But after warm days, it will turn [and] colder air will return with much colder air from the north.

“Saturday has sun and wintry showers, with settled conditions through the end of March bringing plenty of sunny spells across the UK.”

Bristol residents should wake to another bright and sunny day with highs of 14C expected.

UK weather forecast

Thursday:

Cloud and patchy rain across Northern Ireland and much of Scotland. The far north sunny intervals and isolated showers. For the south it will be dry with long sunny periods.

Outlook for Friday to Sunday:

Dry for many but with more cloud than of late. Cold with wintry showers in some eastern parts, the best of any sunshine in the north-west. Windy across the south.
