UK weather: Another 10 days of hot and sunny weather as temperatures soar to 28C

There will be another 10 days of hot and sunny weather, forecasters have said, as the nation finally began recording warmer temperatures.

August has seen torrential downpours and chilly weather for much of the washout British summer this year.

But Brits are now at the beginning of a hot spell which saw temperatures forecast up to 28C yesterday.

Today, the Met Office predicts more sunshine and warmer weather with just a few isolated showers in some areas.

And long range forecasts predict that the hot weather is here to stay and that Brits will see warmer temperatures for at least the next week or possibly as long as 10 days.

The mercury is predicted to stay above or close to 20C in most regions during the day and there is a lower chance of rainy weather in some places.

Meanwhile, a village in the Scottish Highlands recorded the hottest temperature in the UK so far for the month of August.

Tyndrum in Stirling hit a temperature of 26.8C on Wednesday, according to the Met Office.

In Northern Ireland on the previous day Castlederg in County Tyrone recorded the highest temperature in the UK and Ireland at 24.3C.

And temperatures are expected to pick up in the region.

A Met Office forecaster said: "Any early mist or fog patches (are) soon burning away on a fine, dry, sunny, warm day, with temperatures highest towards Belfast."

BBC Weather forecaster Tomasz Schafernaker also predicted a long spell of warm weather for the UK.

He said: “We have entered the spell of some very settled weather brought by something called the blocking high and it’s likely to be here for the next seven to 10 days bringing settled weather conditions.

“For the next 10 days we’ll see misty mornings, variable cloud cover and there will be some warm sunshine around as well.”

Today:

Cloudy start for many parts but this lifting and breaking during the day with good sunny spells. Cooler than previous days in the east with brisk winds and the chance of isolated showers. Still warm in the west.

Tonight:

Breezy and fairly cloudy in the north and east, perhaps with an isolated shower. Clearer spells in the west and cool for parts of Wales, west England and central Scotland.

Friday:

Another day with sunny spells for many, though cloudier for central parts of England and east Wales. Perhaps an isolated shower in the east where still breezy.
