UK weather and Brexit chaos see price of foreign holidays plunge

Brexit chaos and the sudden scorching weather have sent the cost of foreign holidays plunging.

Many of the best bargains are in Greece and Turkey as tour operators try to lure Brits away from home.

Travel firm Tui says it is selling thousands of holidays in July and August for less than £449 per person.

Deals include a week’s B&B in Bodrum, Turkey, for as little as £230 – slashed from £552. And a seven-night, self-catering break on the Greek island of Zante has been cut from £492 to £245.

The move comes at a turbulent time for UK travel firms. In April, Tui reported half-year losses of £261million, while Thomas Cook, Britain’s oldest travel operator, has suffered a record £1.5billion loss.

Regional airline Flybmi went bust in February, and Monarch Airlines collapsed in 2017.

Euromonitor International , the analysis group, says the number of overseas leisure trips could fall by 10 per cent by 2022 as millions opt for a staycation.

Tourism chiefs say Britons are taking 5.8million more UK holidays than 10 years ago. Visit Britain says demand for short breaks increased seven per cent in 2017, while longer trips went up three per cent.

Butlins says it has seen a “double digit” growth in demand for summer bookings.

Thomas Cook spokesman Will Waggott said: “With just a few more weeks to go until the kids break up from school, there are lots of great holiday deals out there to be had.”
