UK weather: Alex Beresford's 'snow warning' as band of wild weather moves in

Weather across the UK could be "on the wintry side" today as a band of rain moves across the country, GMB weather guru Alex Beresford has warned.

Giving the early forecast on the ITV morning show today (December 13), he indicated that some rain moving across the country could turn into something a bit colder.

A band of rain is set to move across the central areas of the country, affecting Wales and the Midlands, with showers further north possibly turning wintry.

Alex Beresford's morning forecast said: "It is going to be fairly unsettled at the start of the week.

"It stays on the milder side, particularly in the south with temperatures in double digits.

"Across the south it is a dry but fairly overcast start, although still mild.

"We do have a zone of rain which will affect Wales and the Midlands through today but up towards the north it is going to be brighter and certainly a fair bit colder with a few showers here and there.

"Up over the hills with that colder air, we could see some of those showers turning a little on the wintry side."

He also stated that tomorrow morning (Tuesday) would be set for "a touch of frost" in places as overnight temperatures in the UK plummet as far down as 1C.

People are still living in hope of a white Christmas this year, with a cold snap across the country expected to arrive just in time for the holidays, according to long-range Met Office forecasts.

The Met Office five-day forecast for the UK

Today (Monday):

Very windy at first for Shetland. Rain stalling across Wales, central and eastern England, becoming heavier for a time later today. Drier, mild and occasionally bright further south. Elsewhere, some sunshine but showers too, these mainly in the northwest.

Tonight:

Rain Wales and central England sinking southwards. Some fog to north with frost parts of northern England and east Scotland. Becoming windier Scotland with rain arriving in west later.

Tuesday:

Dry for most but fairly cloudy, best clear spells to lee of high ground and across central parts. Rain and strong winds in far north.

Outlook for Wednesday to Friday:

Wind and rain in the far northwest quickly easing on Wednesday, leaving a widely dry, settled, and often rather cloudy period with light winds. Mild at first, turning gradually colder.
