UK weather: 60mph gales and thunderstorms to make it 'feel more like autumn than August'

Britain will "feel more like autumn than August" as heavy rain, strong winds and thunderstorms move in.

A yellow weather warning for rain is in place for Bristol today (Friday) and tomorrow. Temperatures are expected to peak around 20C but a strong wind could make it feel a lot cooler.

Downpours are likely to hit most of the UK with some parts receiving as much as 30mm of rain within hours.

Drivers and passengers have been warned to expect disruption on our roads and rail lines this weekend.

Gales of 60mph could affect coasts along Bristol Channel, English Channel and the Strait of Dover on Saturday while strong, thundery showers may lead to flooding in Scotland.

Met Office meteorologist Sarah Kent said: "The first band of rain could bring 30mm of rain in places, and if you draw the short straw, then you could get another 30mm with the showers that follow.

"Some places might get as much as 60mm of rain. The English Channel coast could see winds in excess of 60mph.

"Saturday is going to be a very unseasonal day, it could feel more like autumn than August."

Friday:

Heavy rain will continue moving northeastwards across Scotland, although dry in Shetland. Elsewhere, sunshine and heavy blustery showers with hail and thunder. Windy, with coastal gales in southwest England later.

Outlook for Saturday to Monday:

Heavy, thundery showers on Saturday and unseasonably windy over England and Wales with gales for some. Winds steadily easing thereafter but further showers or spells of rain and becoming cooler.
