UK weather: 50mm of rain forecast by Met Office as Storm Edouard strikes

Britain is in for "dull and damp" weather over the next few days with 50mm of rain to fall as Tropical Storm Edouard arrives.

The cyclone continues to travel through the Atlantic Ocean and is expected to reach the UK by today (Thursday).

Met Office forecaster Aidan McGivern said the worst of the weather will be seen in Wales with "50mm plus in some of the more exposed spots".

"Temperatures once again held back because of the cloud and outbreaks of rain," he told the Mirror.

National Resources Wales has placed two flood alerts in place, as a result.

BBC meteorologist Tomascz Schafernaker agreed Britain is going to be left particularly "soggy" with outbreaks of rain to "hang around for 48 hours or so".

However, he said the weekend's "looking pretty good" with "lots of warm sunshine on the way" - and some forecasters predict the UK could see seven days of heat next week.

Storm Edouard will only add to the wet weather on Thursday

Netweather weather charts show temperatures hitting 26C between Sunday and July 20 but the forecaster has also indicated 30C is possible.

In the meantime, Mr Schafernaker said a "ribbon of cloud stretching all the way from Denmark across the UK, out in the Atlantic" will bring "waves of rain rippling along" today.

The "elongated weather fronts" currently cloaking Britain saw temperatures plummet in Scotland overnight, with highs of just 7C in the north while some of the glens were expected to drop to freezing.

However, Mr McGivern said a south westerly breeze is "bringing increasingly humid air" meaning much of the country will feel muggy with average temperatures of 17C.

He said rainfall will be "on and off" rather than persistent but "there will be some heavier outbreaks at times", particularly in southern England and South Wales.

Bristol will wake to rain but it should turn dry in time for the afternoon. Highs of 18C are expected on Friday before the mercury climbs to a balmy 22C on Sunday.

UK weather forecast

Thursday:

Most of England and Wales cloudy and muggy with outbreaks of rain and drizzle. Scotland and Northern Ireland brighter with sunny spells and showers, some heavy, especially eastern Scotland.

Outlook for Friday to Sunday:

Sunny spells and showers on Friday, heaviest most frequent in the east/northeast. Most places dry with sunny spells over the weekend, although rain will affect the northwest on Sunday.
