UK weather: 14-hour wind warning amid fears of widespread travel disruption

The Met Office has issued a weather warning for strong winds across the UK.

The yellow weather warning for wind is in place for much of the UK on Tuesday (7 December).

The adverse weather is expected to cause some travel disruption, with damage to longer journeys and cancellations across the transport network likely.

The Met Office offers a list of what to expect

  • Some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport are likely
  • Probably some bus and train services affected, with some journeys taking longer
  • Delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges likely
  • Some short term loss of power and other services is possible
  • It’s likely that some coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities will be affected by spray and/or large waves
The Met Office forecast for the upcoming week

Today:

Bright with sunny spells in the west with early showers gradually fading, best of the sunshine Northern Ireland and western Scotland. Elsewhere, cloudier with showers or rain at times. Windy at first and feeling cold.

Tonight:

Cold with clear spells this evening. Turning cloudier and windier overnight with rain developing in the north and west with some hill snow over northern England and Scotland.

Monday:

Early rain and hill snow in the north and west spreading eastwards, clearing eastern UK during the afternoon. Sunny spells and heavy, blustery showers follow. Windy and blustery.

Outlook for Tuesday to Thursday:

Wet with snow on the hills and very windy Tuesday and Wednesday, with coastal gales in the west. Perhaps drier to start on Thursday before becoming wet and windy again.
