UK users may have to enter credit card details to use Reddit and Twitter

UK users who want to keep accessing popular sites Reddit and Twitter may have to input credit card details to prove they are over 18.

The move would be part of Government moves to restrict access to pornography.

Most major social media platforms - including Facebook, Instagram and Tumblr, ban porn on their sites.

But Twitter and Reddit do not, meaning they could fall within new UK laws that propose age verification has to be put in place for any site that hosts large quantities of adult material, reports The Guardian.

If the platforms want to avoid having age verification gateways they would need to remove all porn from their pages.

The new system would see users give their details to an age verification provider which would then allow them to access adult content sites.

Sites which refuse to comply could be fined 10% of their global revenue or be banned.
