UK travel announcement today - here's all the major changes expected in update

The UK's travel restrictions are set to be updated today with some major announcements to be made.

The red, green and amber lists could be completely overhauled with dozens of countries expected to be shuffled around in the latest review.

It comes as the UK Government plan to simplify travel restrictions amid speculation the traffic light system could be scrapped from October 1.

The Scottish Government can set its own rules but have followed the UK in almost every other travel announcement.

Green and amber lists are expected to be merged to form one category of low-risk countries while the number of destinations on the red list will be reduced.

There is also speculation that fully-vaccinated arrivals will no longer need to take a pre-departure lateral flow test or a post-arrival PCR test. This would save travellers around £100 per trip.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps is expected to make the announcement later on Friday, with the fellow devolved UK nations expected to follow suit.

Here's what could be revealed announcement today:

Tests

  • PCR tests could be scrapped and replaced with Lateral Flow Tests
  • It would costs around £30 instead of £100

  • Will not have to show a negative test returning from green list country

Non-vaccinated travellers

  • They could be required to quarantine at home for 10 days

  • May be required to take two tests when arriving from a low-risk location

Traffic light system

  • Traffic light system could be scrapped

  • To be replaced with a go or no-go system

  • Number of destinations on the red list will be reduced
