UK tourists warned travel to Spain could be banned until end of summer

Spain's Prime Minister has reportedly said he doesn't expect to be welcoming tourists back until most of the population had been vaccinated.

This comes as the UK's Home Secretary said it is "far too early" to speculate on restrictions, when asked whether people should be booking a foreign holiday for this summer.

According to Euro Weekly News, Pedro Sanchez, was speaking at the 113th meeting of the Executive Council of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) held in Madrid on Wednesday.

Mr Sanchez is reported to have said: "Only mass vaccination will open the way to the normality we want."

On December 22 last year, Spain introduced t ravel restrictions on passenger travel from the UK by air and sea, reports the Mirror.

These measures have been extended until 6pm on February 2, with the exception of Spanish nationals and those legally resident in Spain.

Under the current lockdown imposed earlier this month, Brits have been told to not leave home or travel, including internationally, without a legally permitted reason.

Asked whether Britain could keep its borders closed to people outside the UK until the autumn, Priti Patel said: "Our focus of course, with regards to borders and travel, people should not be travelling (now) unless of course it is absolutely critical and essential."

She said the Government's focus remains on delivering the vaccine.

Ms Patel added: "We have stringent measures (at the border) for a very good reason because we want to protect the health of members of the public and also we want to make sure that we can deliver and safeguard this world-leading vaccine rollout programme."
