UK to take part in Christmas Eve doorstep bell ring to battle loneliness at 6pm tonight

At 6pm tonight you might hear pots and pats being clanged from doorsteps around your neighbourhood as almost half a million people have pledged to take part in a Christmas Eve bell-ringing to combat loneliness.

People have promised to stand outside and ring a bell or make noise however they can for two minutes to help battle loneliness - with the movement following the same idea as Clap for Carers.

The campaign has been organised by Mary Beggs-Reid from Harrogate in North Yorkshire and aims to bring communities together after a trying 2020.

She said her event is "more needed now than ever" after strict measures have been put in place across the UK to help combat the spread of coronavirus, leaving many isolated this Christmas.

To take part all you need to do is take to your doorstep with a bell of some description and ring it for two minutes.

If you don’t have a bell, there are numerous apps that can make the desired sound. You can even ring your own doorbell or bang a saucepan.

"This will be our happy moment. Covid can not take this from us so ring louder," said Ms Beggs-Reid.

The event has been endorsed by Captain Sir Tom Moore, who called it "a brilliant initiative at a time where it is really needed".
