UK 'to scrap quarantine' for fully vaccinated visitors from amber list countries

Plans to allow fully vaccinated travellers into the UK could be revealed within “the next couple of weeks” the transport secretary announced.

Grant Shapps said ministers are “actively working” on proposals to allow those who have been double jabbed outside of the UK to travel without having to quarantine if they are coming from an amber list region.

There is no specific time frame as to when this will happen with the transport secretary saying these measures will be brought in “as soon as we can."

He called this “phase two” of the government's Covid international travel policy.

However, he did hint people in the EU will be allowed in sooner than those from the US due to a unified digital vaccine passport scheme.

In an interview with Sky News, he added: "The next thing is to be able to recognise apps from other countries or certification from other countries - easier done from some places like the EU where they have a digital app coming along than it is in the United States where I think they have 50 different systems, one for each state, largely paper based.

"So there are some complexities to work through there, but this is phase one, and we hope to follow it up quickly with double vaccinated people from other countries coming here."

Mr Shapps added: "Obviously we will look at whether they are World Health Organisation certified and the like and I would think, in terms of timescale, in the next couple of weeks I'll be able to come forward and say more about other locations in the world."

The news follows plans laid out in the House Of Commons yesterday by the transport secretary that all fully vaccinated adults will no longer have to quarantine on their return from amber list countries on July 19th. Children under the age of 18 are also exempt.

A PCR test will still be required within two days of arrival back in the UK.

Shortly after the announcement easyJet announced flight bookings to amber list countries were up 400% on last week as the airline put on more than 145,000 extra seats.

Current rules dictate that all holidaymakers must self-isolate for 10 days upon their return from countries like Spain or Italy.
