UK to end Afghanistan evacuation efforts today

The UK is set to end its evacuation efforts in Afghanistan today.

Since the Taliban secured control of Kabul on August 15, many civilians and military personnel have been evacuating the country.

Now, after nearly two weeks of evacuations, the head of the UK armed forces has confirmed today will be the last day of evacuations with very few civilian flights remaining.

Gen Sir Nick Carter said it was heartbreaking that the evacuation had failed to get everybody out, something the UK government expected to happen.

The Defence Secretary, Ben Wallace, said people left in Afghanistan would be advised to seek access to third countries or be guided on how to "look after themselves" under Taliban rule.

He told Sky News: "We at 4.30 this morning, UK time, closed the Baron’s hotel, shut the processing centre, and the gates were closed at Abbey gate."

"We will process those people that we’ve brought with us, the 1,000 people approximately inside the airfield now, and we will seek a way to continue to find a few people in the crowds where we can, but overall the main processing is now closed and we have a matter of hours."

Earlier in the week, the Taliban declared the deadline for evacuations to be August 31, only a few days away.

While today is the last day the UK will carry out evacuations, the U.S. has declared it will keep evacuating Afghan refugees from Kabul until "the last moment."

France ended its evacuation efforts on Friday, they claim to have evacuated nearly 3,000 people out of the country.
