UK Thunderstorms mapped and when heavens could open amid weather warning

These weather maps show the expected intensity of the thunderstorms and torrential rain which are forecast to hit large parts of England this weekend.

The Met Office has issued a weather warning for heavy rain and thundery showers, which will be in place for 48 hours from midnight Saturday (Jul 24).

Forecasters fear floods could devastate homes and businesses, and there is a risk that the worst hit areas could be cut off.

The new weather warning comes off the back of an extreme heatwave which has scorched the Westcountry and large parts of England for over a week.

The latest weather graphics from Ventusky show what could be in store for the South West, and Somerset, Bristol and Gloucestershire will be bracing for a deluge come the early hours of Saturday morning.

According to the images, thunderstorms could move in at around 7am, bringing the threat of heavy rain long into the night.

"Outbreaks of rain and some thunderstorms are expected to spread from the southwest on Friday night," the Met Office told the Express.

"This introduces unsettled conditions to much of England and Wales for Saturday and Sunday.

"Heavy, thundery showers are likely to break out by day, particularly on Sunday when these could be widespread and locally torrential.

"Lightning and hail are also expected. Rainfall amounts will vary from place to place, but there is the potential for up to 100mm to build up in some locations over the course of the weekend, much of which could fall in a short period of time."
