UK shoppers could spend £1.4 billion on Amazon Prime Day event

Tech giant Amazon is due to hold its annual Prime Day discount shopping event later this month, and a report has predicted UK customers could spend £1.4 billion.

On June 21 and 22, Amazon will offer Prime members over two million deals across all categories, including fashion and beauty.

West London-headquartered delivery price comparison site ParcelHero forecasts last year’s estimated $10.4 billion (£7.4 billion) Amazon spending spree during the event will reach $14.9 billion this time around. The firm predicts Brits will spend £1.4 billion.

Amazon last year said that third-party sellers—most of which are small and medium-sized businesses—surpassed $3.5 billion in sales on Prime Day.

ParcelHero’s head of consumer research, David Jinks said: “Traditionally, Amazon Prime Day sales have jumped by around 55% every year. We also know that many people who remained employed during the long lockdowns have some serious money burning a hole in their wallets and purses.”

However, Jinks pointed out that last year’s Prime Day was in October, ideally placed for the beginning of Christmas shopping and at a time when many countries were still in lockdown.

He added: “This year, it kicks off on 21 June… and the High Streets have reopened. With that in mind, we’re being a little cautious with our forecast this year and predict a “mere” 44% growth in spending over the two days.”

ParcelHero said its research puts UK customers as spending over £1 billion during the two-day event last year.
