UK weather forecast: Brits braced for icy blast as 2,000-mile 'weather dome' arrives

Summer is almost over for Brits - and this weekend's weather could hail the end.

Meteorologists have forecast a cold blast over the coming days, which may see the winter coats making their annual return.

Temperatures are predicted to drop to 4C overnight in some parts of Scotland on Saturday, meaning the autumn chill has finally arrived.

The mercury will peak at 16C in London on both days this weekend, and plummet down to 9C overnight. So anybody planning to join the queue to see the Queen's lying-in-state should wrap up well.

Further north, the weather will be slightly cooler in Manchester and Leeds, getting up to 14C in both cities on Saturday.

Cardiff will see temperatures of 6-12C and Edinburgh 5-13C over the weekend, while in Belfast the dials will hit 14C on Sunday.

The hottest summer on record will soon feel like a distant memory moving into next week.

A near 2,000-mile dome of high pressure will build across Britain at the weekend, steering winds north while keeping milder Atlantic breezes at bay.

The area of high pressure will sit over the country for the next five or six days, bringing dry spells with it.

Jim Dale, meteorologist for British Weather Services, said: “The remains of will Hurricane Danielle move away and allow high pressure to build to the west of the UK.

“Temperatures are going to drop quite rapidly, and most places will lose a few degrees in the daytime while dropping to single figures overnight.

“It will start to feel colder towards the end of the week before this dome of high-pressure stalls across the UK allowing cold air to move across the UK.”

Weather for London on Monday when the Queen's funeral takes place will be overcast and slightly warmer, however, although short bursts of rain are expected.

Thousands are expected to flock to Westminster Abbey to witness the historic state ceremony on what is a Bank Holiday.
