UK sees sharp rise in coronavirus deaths

The number of people dying of coronavirus in the UK has risen sharply.

The Department for Health said that between Sunday and Monday a further 381 patients have died in hospital after testing positive for coronavirus.

This brings the total hospital deaths up to 1,789 as of 5pm on Monday -up from 1,408 the day before.

They also confirmed that as of 9am this morning, March 31, 3,009 people have tested positive bringing the total UK number up to 25,150.

A total of 143,186 people have now been tested.

This announcement follows the news from Public Health Wales that a further seven people have died in Wales from the virus, raising the death toll to 69.

112 new cases of the virus have also been confirmed today bringing the total number of cases to 1,563.

Earlier Health Minister Vaughan Gething said 22,000 people in Wales have now signed up to volunteer either in the community or the NHS.
