UK seaside town Penarth uses photograph of Magaluf to promote summer festival

A seaside town has been blasted for using a picture of a Spanish beach to advertise its summer festival.

The council in Penarth, in South Wales, used an image of the popular holiday resort of Magaluf.

But locals are furious their town — with its Victorian pier and pebbly beach — was swapped for the shot of the Costas.

One Penarth resident described it as “just embarrassing”.

She tweeted: “We are so lucky to live in Penarth, beautiful sea views, wonderful pier, great parks etc so who in their right mind at @PenarthCouncil thought to use a picture of Magaluf to advertise the Penarth Summer Festival?”

Another described it as “absolutely ridiculous” and “just bizarre” on social media.

But a spokesman for Penarth Town Council said: “The whole point was to use something different...

“A lot of marketing pictures used are of the pier and people may just look past it.

“It was not a mistake, it was used to spark interest and we have had a lot of positive comments.”
