UK's top 10 most popular dog breeds - See if your pet is on the list

Labradors are the most popular dog breed in the UK, according to latest research.

According to the data, over a 10th (12%) of dog owners have a Labrador, closely followed by Cockerpoos (8%) and Springer Spaniels (6%).

The research, conducted by Dogfriendlycottages.co.uk , also looked at the holiday habits of more than 2,000 dog owners and found that three quarters (73%) of people book holiday destinations based on the needs of their dogs.

Last year it was revealed that Labradors returned to the top of the list as the UK’s most popular dog, after being knocked off the podium by French Bulldogs in 2018.

According to Dogfriendlycottages.co.uk’s survey, only 0.5% of dog owners own a French Bulldog in 2020.

The Royal Veterinary College released a study in mid-2018 which concluded that the breed suffers with significant health problems, including conjunctivitis and skin fold dermatitis, which could be a reason behind the breed’s decline, reports Wales Online .

The top 10 most popular dog breeds in the UK are:

1. Labrador Retrievers

Dogfriendlycottages.co.uk also asked British pet owners what the best dog-related experiences they’ve had are, and used the results to create a ‘bucket list’ of activities for members of the public to use as inspiration.

When asked to list their dog’s favourite experience, three quarters (75%) said long countryside walks, over half (59%) said relaxing in the local beer garden, closely followed by splashing around in the sea (57%).

The survey also found that more than half (57%) of dog owners say they feel their pets deserve a holiday too, with 87% admitting to feeling guilty about leaving their pet behind when they go away.

Matt Fox, CEO of Dogfriendlycottages.co.uk, said: "Dogs are such an important part of family life, so it really is no wonder that more and more people are planning their holidays around the needs of their pets.

"After all, why should we have all the fun? The idea of experiences that can be shared between humans and dogs alike is an exciting one, and one we can definitely get behind.

"I hope that by revealing these opportunities and experiences, we can help our customers to get out there and enjoy the best life has to offer with their four-legged friends."
