UK's most hygienic supermarket chain revealed - beating Asda, Tesco, M&S, Morrisons and Sainsbury's

A supermarket chain famed for its value also has the highest hygiene standards.

A study by Property Inspect, using data from the Food Standards Agency, identified which major supermarket chain has the highest percentage of its stores with a five-star hygiene rating.

Aldi was named the highest-ranked supermarkets for hygiene standards.

More than 99% of Aldi supermarkets had a five-star hygiene rating.

Out of its 744 shops, 99.73% of Aldis have top marks from the Food Standards Agency.

According to the FSA website, all Aldi supermarkets in the North East have a five star rating.

Out of its English, Welsh and Northern Irish stores visited by FSA inspectors, just one, a four-star rated Aldi in Edgware Road, London, has a score below five stars.

Waitrose had the second-highest percentage of its stores with a five-star rating, at 98.24%, followed by M&S with 96.72%, Sainsbury's at 96.65%, Iceland with 95.32%, Lidl with 93.17%, Morrisons (92.06%), Asda (89.62%).

Only 88.64% of Co-op stores were rated five stars. The Mirror has approached the Co-op for comment.
