UK's leading energy suppliers are resuming home smart meter installations

UK energy companies are resuming new no-contact smart meter installations.

Four of the 'big six' firms - E.on, Npower, British Gas and SSE - are taking appointments again with new measures in place to ensure the safety of both their customers and their engineers.

Prior to the coronavirus pandemic, great progress had been made in replacing old, standard meters with new smart meters that are designed to wirelessly and automatically send energy usage to your supplier.

In time, smart meters will remove the need for in-home meter readings that two million households across the country are said to still rely on.

Understandably, however, over 70s and those considered 'high risk' are still being asked to wait until a later date. Individuals with an appointment booked are also asked to keep a check on symptoms and reschedule should they shown any.

Speaking on the subject of smart meter advantages, uSwitch energy expert Will Owen says: "Smart meters are great for letting suppliers instantly know if your energy use has changed, meaning bills can be adjusted quickly."

"Many of us are using more energy than usual during the lockdown as workers and their children stay at home."

"Waiting for a meter reader can mean that bills don't accurately show how much energy has been used, potentially resulting in nasty shocks down the line."
