UK Eurovision fans have lashed out at Saturday night’s result after James Newman suffered the humiliation of finishing last with no points.
After coronavirus forced its cancellation last year, the world famous event returned this week with Rotterdam as its host city, following Duncan Laurence’s win for the Netherlands in 2019.
Bookies hadn’t tipped former Newcastle University student and Brit winning songwriter James to do well on the night and their pessimism proved to be spot on as he ended up bottom of the leaderboard without a single point from the juries or voting public.
While James put a very brave face on on camera, BBC Eurovision commentator Graham Norton branded the result “unfair” and viewers at home were disgusted at the nil point outcome.
One fumed: “isn't it time we pulled out of euro vision? Our song was much better than nil points?”
Another tweeted: “UK's song wasn't great, but Nil point ? I thought Italy's song (if you can call it that) was awful but what do I know” and a third reacted: "Popular music was supposed to be one of our few remaining tent pole industries. Getting nil points at the ESC is an insult to our music industry. Perhaps not winning, but at least getting on the board
As the odds predicted, Italy ending up winning Eurovision 2021 just ahead of France with Switzerland in third.
Others blamed the song for woeful UK result., while some fans blamed politics, particularly Brexit and others are calling for the UK to boycott Eurovision.
One tweeted: "The UK got nil points not a single point #Eurovision2021, the song was not that bad was it ?? we didn’t even get a point off of Malta wtf . Smells of revenge #Brexit " and a second fumed: "why do we keep taking part and footing most of the bill. This is not a music competition, it’s a political arena.
"Ours did not deserve nil points!!!! I guess it was all about Brexit"
