UK's fat towns league table revealed - how does your area measure up for obesity?

NHS figures reveal the areas in Britain with the fattest people as the Government revealed plans to stamp out promotion of unhealthy food.

Those who are obese are three times as likely to die from coronavirus and seven times as likely to need ventilation if they catch they killer bug, according to Public Health England.

A person is classed as obese if they have a body mass index of over 25.

The UK is currently battling a second wave of Covid-19 infections and could enter the spring facing down the barrel of a third amid desperate efforts to vaccinate the nation's most vulnerable.

It comes after Downing Street announced this week "buy one get one free" promotions and other multibuy offers on unhealthy foods will be restricted from April 2022 under plans to tackle obesity.

Admission rates ranged from 413 to 3,804 per 100,000 population (NHS Digital)

Retailers must also stop offering promotions on other unhealthy foods in prominent places, such as at checkouts or store entrances.

Britain's most overweight area is the Wirral, part of Liverpool City Region which was the first to be thrust into Tier 3 restrictions after a major surge in infections from September.

The Wirral had the most hospital admissions where obesity was a factor, with 3,804, than anywhere else in the UK.

Next on the list are Wigan, York, Stoke-on-Trent and Nottingham, with the five regions all recording admission rates of over 3,000 per 100,000 population.

On the flip side, Wokingham and West Berkshire both had admission rates below 500, with the NHS figures compiled in 2018/19.

Southwark had London's highest admissions with 2,912 and Richmond the lowest at 730.

Admission rates overall for the country ranged from 413 to 3,804 per 100,000 population, with the national rate 1,615 per 100,000 population.

The 2018/19 obesity-admissions NHS report found that across Britain, around three in every four patients admitted were female - that's 74 percent or two thirds of last year's 876,000 admissions.

Seventy percent of patients of both sexes were aged between 35 and 64.

The report states extra weight does not appear to impact someone's potential for contracting coronavirus, but can inhibit their immune system's ability to fight it off.

Ministers on Monday announced the new restrictions will apply to foods high in fat, salt or sugar - including cakes, crisps, soft drinks, breakfast cereals, pizzas and ready meals.

Small stores are exempt from the plans aimed at helping the nation lose weight.

The Department of Health and Social Care said the coronavirus pandemic has highlighted the need for the nation to lose weight.

But the plans follow the Government's "help out to eat out" scheme, which saw diners given 50 percent off food and non-alcoholic drinks in order to boost the hospitality sector.

The below figures show the areas in England with the highest and lowest rates of obesity-related hospital admissions per 100,000 people.
