UK's coronavirus death toll increases by 563 overnight to 2,352

The number of people dead after testing positive for coronavirus in the UK has increased by 563 overnight.

The death toll is now at 2,352 - up from the 1,789 deaths reported yesterday. It is the highest single increase in the number of deaths in the UK since the outbreak began.

29,474 people have been tested positive, the UK Government's Department of Health and Social Care has confirmed.

A total of 152,979 people have now been tested across the country.

Of the 2,352 deaths across the UK, 76 occurred in Scotland, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon confirmed earlier today.

In Greater Glasgow and Clyde, the number of positive coronavirus cases has risen by 85 overnight to a total of 632 - up from 547 yesterday.

The Scottish Government has also confirmed that a total of 17,007 tests have been conducted, with 2310 of them diagnosed as positive - an increase of 317 from yesterday.

It comes as Nicola Sturgeon said that there is a “hope and expectation” that the repurposed SEC will not need to be used as a hospital.

Speaking to parliament, she said that the new temporary hospital will be ready within a fortnight with beds to care for 300 patients initially and a capacity for this to increase to 1,000.
