UK's cheapest supermarket revealed - and it's not Tesco or Lidl

The UK's cheapest supermarket has been named - and it's not Tesco or Lidl.

Asda managed to scoop two titles at an award ceremony held by retail industry magazine, The Grocer.

It was crowned Online Supermarket of the Year and the UK’s Lowest Priced Supermarket. The company picked up the awards at the annual Grocer Gold Awards ceremony.

This marks the second occasion the retailer has claimed the title of Online Supermarket of the Year, and the 24th time it has won the prize for Lowest Priced Supermarket.

The big four grocer won both accolades for its dedication to helping customers save money and shop for the products they love more easily online, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Throughout the pandemic the supermarket accelerated its online growth to more than double the number of home delivery slots available, whilst adding more convenient and flexible ways to shop through the expansion of a rapid delivery partnership with Uber Eats and the addition of a one-hour Express Delivery service across its full online product range.

It also recently launched a number of online and app-based tools to help customers budget and quickly find what they need, including a recipe planning feature that can be personalised to add all items straight to basket, as well as ‘Your Regulars’, which predicts customers’ favourite brands and the frequency with which they shop certain products.

In addition to retaining the title as Online Supermarket of the Year, Asda has consistently maintained its position as the UK’s Lowest Priced Supermarket after recording 33 out of 50 wins in The Grocer’s weekly comparison of 33 items across major supermarkets.

Derek Lawlor, chief merchandising officer at Asda, said: “We continue to offer our customers the best possible value across our own brand and branded ranges, helping them save money across what has been a challenging year for many.”

Simon Gregg, vice president of online grocery at Asda, added: “Our online operation has been key in responding to the changing needs of our customers and deserves the recognition it has achieved in winning this award.

"The team are constantly innovating to offer increased flexibility and convenience, be it through rapid delivery services or the tools available online to make life easier for shoppers.”
