UK's cheapest supermarket named and it's not Lidl, Asda or Tesco

Aldi has been named the cheapest supermarket in April, by a leading consumer watchdog.

Which? conducted a price comparison of 20 popular items on customer's shopping lists.

This included food and household essentials - such as own-label eggs and raspberries as well as branded products including Chicago Town pizzas.

Aldi was the cheapest this month at just £22.64 for the basket of items, while Asda was the cheapest of the ‘big four’ grocers at £24.95.

At the other end of the spectrum, Waitrose was the priciest. It was £8.25 or 36% more expensive than Aldi, at £30.89.

The German chain was £8.25 cheaper than Waitrose for an equivalent trolley of items.

Julie Ashfield, Managing Director of Buying at Aldi, said: “We continue to focus on providing the best possible value to our customers, and are immensely proud to be named the UK’s cheapest supermarket for April.”

Groceries with some of the widest price differences included a popular tea brand, where there was a £1.22 difference between Aldi and Waitrose, and own-label large free-range eggs, which had a difference of £1.15.
