Bargain hunters have been given a helping hand with major UK supermarkets ranked according to price.
Consumer champions at Which? have come up with the handy guide for anyone heading to the shops.
They looked at all the high street favourites - including Tesco, ASDA, Ocado and Waitrose.
And the Manchester Evening News reports how while shoppers may have favourites, there was a clear winner on price.
The Which? investigation confirmed budget-friendly German giant Lidl is the cheapest supermarket so far this year - just nudging out Aldi while ASDA completed the top three.
Which? investigated every day throughout March, checking the prices of 20 food, drink and household items at every major UK supermarket.
Items included apples, eggs and tomatoes, as well as branded goods such as Hovis wholemeal bread.
Its price comparison basket consisted of a combination of own-label and branded products, including groceries and household essentials, with Lidl coming in the cheapest at £22.48.
The results were as follows:
- Lidl - £22.48
- Aldi - £22.51
- ASDA - £24.76
- Sainsbury's - £25.95
- Tesco - £26.10
- Morrisons - £26.17
- Ocado - £27.87
- Waitrose - £29.77
The news comes after the supermarket was declared the cheapest in the UK in February - and for the whole of 2020.
Lidl stores remain open during lockdown with shoppers allowed to visit when needing to stock up on essential purchases such as food and medicine.
Non-essential purchases can also be made during these visits.
